I just read a post by Ann Cummings...Green at Being Green where she discusses her recent contributions to our attempts at being a green society. She mentioned that she uses paper bags and hasn't yet gone so far as to start using fabric bags for her groceries. As I commented on her post I realized that my information could be useful to the rest of the Rainers out there and so here I am...
In an attempt to be "good" and green (after viewing an Oprah show on the subject) I decided to make the sacrafice and get some fabric bags. What a pain, I thought, having to remember to bring them, find a place to keep them...I wondered if it would be worth it.
I found these bags, made by One Bag at a Time at my local health food store and bought 5.

I love these bags! I can't believe how much they hold. They are strong and have a plastic insert that sits on the bottom for strength, but you can lay the bags flat for storage. They are super easy to carry, take up less room in the car than the 10 or 12 plastic bags. I empty the food out and then put them back in the car so they are there when I need them.
They are awesome for carrying staging props!
Visit their website for more info and for store locations.
By the way, according to their website, it takes 70% more global warming gasses to make a paper bag instead of a plastic bag. Also, paper bags do not biodegrade in landfills.

Courtney, Yvonne and Diana: You get so used to their convenience and then when you forget them, you really appreciate the difference they make. Thanks for sharing!
Kristina: I visited my parents in Florida last year and my mother had so many bags that I decided to pull them out of the cabinet and here is a photo. This is just one cabinet...she had plenty more. What kind of bag emergency is she saving up for?
Sharon,
The best use I have found for those plastic bags is as trash bags in every other room besides the kitchen. It will definitely cut down on buying more plastic bags. I double them and they seem to go pretty quickly.
I have been on my recycling craze and looking for fabric bags. So I will definitely check out the website.
Thanks for sharing.
Hi Sharon-
I have been recycling plastic bags back to the grocery store, but will check out the fabric ones!
Kathy
Tanya Good way to recycle...even though I use the fabric bags for food, I still find myself with plastic bags from other stores and I use them for trash too.
Kathy They are so much easier to handle and make it much less of a chore to bring the food into the house. They come in different colors too.

Thanks for sharing. We need to be reminded that little choices we make every day affect our world. Here in California I've noticed that more and more stores are offering the fabric bags. I use them whenever I can. Being a stager and shopping all the time I have collected more than my share of plastic bags. I keep them all and use them for packing up jobs. I can't tell you how many strange looks I've gotten when I tell the cashier I don't need a bag.
Kelly If we each make some effort, we can make a difference!
Julie Mine are bigger than the grocery store ones too. They are more square and hold quite a bit.
Sharon,
Publix also has these bags. Just yesterday our family visited the Charleston Tea Plantation (America's only Tea Garden) and their bags were a non woven bag. Great for advertising and great to reuse. More information click here to visit packagingsource.com.
Sharon,
I also have purchased these kinds of bags from my grocery store. I always keep them in my car and when I go to the grocery store and use them, they take 2 cents off of my bill for each bag I bring. My husband and I keep one in each of our cars filled with a roll of paper towels, windex, box of tissues and a flash light.
I have purchased the fabric ones, but if I only remembered to put them BACK in my car to reuse them. I seem to always forget to take them along with me.

I love these bags. I think I was born green so it has been very easy for me. I love hearing everyones stories about trying to change! You can find bags like these all over. WalMart is now carrying some that only cost a dollar! They are strong. I have many. I also keep them in the car. It's makes it much easier. Way to go!!!
